Job Description

As Director, Employment Counsel India, the primary focus of this role will be to serve as employment counsel for Ameriprise India, with additional responsibilities to periodically provide legal advice on day-to-day Ameriprise India operations in partnership with appropriate subject matter experts within the General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) of Ameriprise Financial, Inc. This role will partner with leaders across the GCO to ensure that Ameriprise India complies with all relevant laws, regulations, industry standards and corporate governance requirements. This role will be part of a global legal team, reporting to Employment Counsel in the U.S.

Key Responsibilities

Employment Law: Serve as employment counsel for operations in India, providing practical, compliant, strategic legal advice and counsel on a full range of employment law issues common to large U.S. public companies with global operations Proactively identify employment law risks and partner with appropriate stakeholders to develop strategies to mitigate such risks Support and advise Employee Relations on employee complaint/hotline investigation matters and other workplace investigations Advise on compliance with the PoSH Act and various other applicable employment laws Provide training to leaders throughout Ameriprise India on employment law compliance Monitor and communicate changes in employment laws relating to the Ameriprise India operations, partnering with Human Resources to drive changes to operations as appropriate Strategically and cost-effectively manage employment litigation or other adversarial proceedings in India, including leading and managing relationships with external counsel Other: Provide general legal support and solutions-focused legal advice on a variety of matters specific to the Ameriprise India business Monitor and ensure in partnership with subject matter experts in the GCO that the organization's India operations comply with all relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards Assist with other legal matters as requested Required Qualifications LLB or LLM degree from a reputable institution with excellent academic credentials A minimum of 10 to 15 years providing employment law advice, with experience in advising multinational corporations Ability to build internal relationships and operate effectively with large multi-stakeholder cross-functional partners at all levels in a fast-paced environment. Outstanding client-service focus and technical mastery to convey complex legal principles clearly and concisely in order to develop solutions and facilitate decision making Strong problem-solving skills Ability to work independently and efficiently Ability to manage confidential, sensitive information Resilient, results-oriented, and collaborative Unquestioned integrity and professionalism Good oral and written communication skills Preferred Qualifications Experience as an in-house counsel for a Fortune 500 company Experience advising financial services
