Suffolk University is pleased to announce immediate openings as a Patrol Officer with the Police and Public Safety Department. Patrol Officers work in partnership with the Suffolk University community they serve to ensure a safe and secure environment, maintain order, protect students, faculty, staff, and guests, prevent crime, protect buildings and properties, reduce the fear of crime, and improve the overall quality of life for the entire Suffolk University community. Primary/Principal Responsibilities  ·       Provide emergency assistance, perform community relations and conflict resolution. ·       Prevent and deter crime, enforce laws, secure crime scenes, investigate crimes, gather evidence, and take statements in compliance with relevant statutory and constitutional legal requirements. ·       Enforce Suffolk University rules and regulations. ·       Respond to calls for assistance, providing walking escorts to university buildings, banks, MBTA stations, parking garages, or other locations as directed by a supervisor. ·       Administer first aid and CPR to the officer’s appropriate level of training. ·       Respond to alarms, maintain fire watch, and handle emergency evacuations. ·       Interior and exterior patrol of buildings and property by foot, bicycle, or vehicle. ·        Prepare and submit appropriate reports. ·       Provide creditable testimony in court, administrative hearings and/or university proceedings. ·       Operate a department vehicle in emergency and non-emergency situations. ·       Perform other public safety, law enforcement or community policing duties as required. Requirements : Must be at least 21 years of age. Must be a US Citizen or a Naturalized US Citizen. Must possess a high school diploma or have passed the High School Equivalency Training Program (HiSET) which was formally known as the GED. Must be able to obtain a Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms (Class A Large Capacity) in accordance with Massachusetts General Law Chapter 140, Section 131. Must possess and demonstrate ethical behavior, emotional stability, sound judgment, integrity, and ability to accept responsibility for completing assigned duties. Current CPR and First Aid certifications are preferred but not required. Must have no prior felony record. Must possess a valid driver's license or be able to obtain a driver's license prior to hire. Successful completion of a Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) certified basic Police Recruit Academy (or have an approved MPTC waiver) and ability to obtain and retain Special State Police (SSPO) and Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff powers in accordance with MGL Chapter 22C, section 63. Ability to successfully complete training and show proficiency in the proper use of department issued weapons, police vehicles and equipment. Ability to obtain MA POST Commission Certification and SSPO Warrant of Appointment and pass a state and national background check pursuant to M.G.L. c. 6E, § 4 as a condition of employment. Possess excellent written and oral communication skills; strong ability to write clear and concise reports; the ability to organize and engage in problem solving activities; a strong commitment to prevention and the community policing philosophy. Protect and serve in a diverse community while exercising sound judgement and to take fair and impartial law enforcement actions that are free from bias. Thorough knowledge and understanding of police authority and jurisdiction, constitutional law, and criminal law and procedure. Prior to appointment, selected candidates will be required to pass a comprehensive background investigation, including drug testing and a comprehensive psychological evaluation.
