Job Summary

Materials & Supplies Accounting is within the Controller's Department and provides accounting, financial analysis, reporting, and control support for inventory and related materials and supplies activities across Duke Energy. The Senior Accounting Analyst applies strong technical accounting knowledge, research capabilities, and sound judgment to help ensure accurate inventory accounting and compliance with GAAP, FERC, company policy, and internal control requirements. This role performs complex analysis, account reconciliations, and research related to inventory balances, transactions, reserves, and operational activity. The position partners with Supply Chain, Operations, Finance, internal and external auditors, regulatory teams, and other stakeholders to resolve issues, respond to data requests, support financial reporting, and clearly communicate results and recommendations to management. This is the fourth level of the financial analysis classification hierarchy. Progression to this level is typically restricted based on business need. Employees at this level work independently and receive minimal guidance. Incumbents are required to have in-depth knowledge and experience, solve complex problems, and act as a resource for less experienced employees. Responsibilities • Perform complex materials and supplies accounting and analysis, including review of inventory balances, transactions, valuation, reserves, adjustments, and other activity to support accurate and timely financial reporting. • Ensure inventory-related accounting is performed in accordance with GAAP, FERC requirements, company policies, and internal controls, while meeting monthly, quarterly, and year-end close deadlines. • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, variance analyses, and management reporting; research unusual items and coordinate timely resolution of reconciling differences. • Analyze inventory data and operational trends to identify risks, anomalies, root causes, and opportunities to improve accounting accuracy, controls, and business processes. • Support accounting for excess, obsolete, slow-moving, damaged, or otherwise impaired materials and supplies, including analysis, documentation, and coordination with business partners. • Partner cross-functionally with Supply Chain, Operations, Finance, Tax, Rates & Regulatory, internal and external auditors, and other stakeholders to resolve issues and promote consistent accounting treatment. • Respond to audit, regulatory, and management data requests by researching source information, preparing clear supporting documentation, and communicating conclusions in a concise and timely manner. • Use financial and inventory systems, including IBM Maximo and PeopleSoft, along with advanced Excel and data analytics tools, to extract, validate, reconcile, and present information. • Drive continuous process improvement and automation by identifying control gaps, reducing manual effort and redundancies, improving documentation, and implementing sustainable solutions. • Manage multiple priorities and projects in a fast-paced environment, proactively communicate status and risks, and escalate issues as appropriate. • Contribute to a collaborative, high-performing team by sharing knowledge, supporting teammates, providing guidance to less experienced employees, and serving as a thought partner
