JOB SUMMARY
Provide overall litigation support under supervision and guidance from Director, Litigation. Assists in-house litigation attorney(s) with handling of litigation preparation and process, maintain and update litigation files and records. Assist with other legal matters as assigned.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Monitor, create and organize case files. Maintain calendar to ensure timely compliance with all court-related deadlines. Draft subpoenas and HIPPA authorizations in order to obtain medical and employment records for cases in litigation; provide authorizations to opposing attorneys for execution; coordinate service of subpoenas and executed authorizations. Draft pleadings, notices of hearing/deposition/examination, correspondence to opposing counsel, and basic motions for review by attorney. Coordinate the setting of depositions, independent medical examinations and inspections with opposing counsel and outside vendors. Arrange for surveillance. Examine discovery responses from opposing counsel and provide summary to assist in-house litigation attorney(s). Draft timeline and summary of events for each case to assist attorneys in litigation and determine whether additional information and/or documentation is needed. Assist in drafting discovery responses for review by attorney. Handle special projects such as responding to court ordered requests. Perform other job-related functions as assigned..
QUALIFICATIONS
DEGREE TYPE: Bachelor's Degree. FIELD(S) OF STUDY: Law EXPERIENCE: Minimum 2 years direct experience with either paralegal certificate or equivalent. Experience with litigation matters in a law firm and/or a company's legal department preferred. COMPETENCIES & SKILLS: Good knowledge of court system and litigation process in order to assess proper procedures and abide by time-sensitive court deadlines. Knowledge of or ability to understand and interpret medical terminology for claims cases. Knowledge of Lexis Nexis or other legal research engine to pull documents or statutes. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Word, PowerPoint and basic Excel. Good writing skills in order to draft pleadings and subpoenas, letters to attorneys and external parties, and summaries for in-house attorneys. Organizational and planning skills to create and maintain case files and calendars. Analytical and communication skills to review records or pleadings and describe important details to attorneys in clear and professional manner. Interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team-based environment and with external contacts.
