About this role

Career Area: Engineering Job Description: Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc. When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other.  We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it. Mechanical Design Engineer – Battery Module Position Summary   Lead the mechanical design and simulation of battery modules from concept development through prototyping, validation, certification, and production release. Apply strong structural design, engineering mechanics, and simulation-driven engineering principles to develop robust, manufacturable, and cost-effective battery module solutions for Caterpillar applications.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborate with Caterpillar machine and application teams to   finalize   customer requirements, operating conditions, mechanical interfaces, packaging constraints, and validation requirements.   Develop battery module architecture, packaging, and detailed mechanical designs, including cell-retention and compression systems, structural components, mounting features, busbar supports, insulation components, cold plates, and overall module cooling solutions.   Integrate Cell Monitoring Units (CMUs), sensing components, electrical interconnects, busbars, and high-voltage and low-voltage harness interfaces into the   module   mechanical architecture.   Account for cell dimensional variation, swelling, compression, thermal expansion, electrical clearance and creepage, assembly requirements, and serviceability throughout the design.   Develop production-ready 3D models, assemblies, BOMs, material specifications, and mechanical interface requirements.   Apply GD&T and perform tolerance stack-up and packaging analyses.   Select materials, mechanical joints, insulation systems, thermal-interface materials, sealing solutions, and manufacturing processes.   Perform structural, thermal, and thermo-mechanical simulations.   Correlate simulation results with physical test data.   Lead Design of Experiments (DoE).   Support DFM, DFA, DFMEA, DVP& R and   validation activities.   Resolve design, validation, supplier, and manufacturing issues.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's or   Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering   or related discipline.   Minimum three years of relevant experience in battery modules, battery packs, energy storage systems, power electronics, or electromechanical product development.   Strong fundamentals in structural design, engineering mechanics, strength of materials, mechanical joints, material   selection , tolerances, heat transfer, and manufacturing processes.   Demonstrated experience developing mechanical products from concept through production release.   Strong capability in 3D modelling, assembly design, mechanical packaging, and   component   integration.   Hands-on experience with structural, thermal, or thermo-mechanical simulation.   Working knowledge of battery module architecture, cooling systems, insulation, electrical isolation, clearance and creepage, and electromechanical integration.   Familiarity with GD&T, tolerance analysis, DFM, DFA, DFMEA, DVP&R, PPAP, PLM, and engineering change processes.   Experience with cooling manifold design, coolant routing, sealing interfaces, or HV/LV harness design is preferred.   Strong technical problem-solving, engineering judgment, documentation, collaboration, and communication skills.
