Job Description

Railway engineering is one of the most important ways that AECOM delivers a better world. We work on major, complex and challenging railway infrastructure projects that increase urban and inter-city mobility for millions of people. AECOM is a global innovator in high-speed and urban transportation. Recent projects include major track improvements for the Southern Renewals Enterprise in England's busiest passenger corridors, the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Rail Link (Hung Shui Kiu-Qianhai), the Elephant & Castle Station capacity upgrade in London, and key design and asset protection services for Network Rail frameworks across the UK. Our Summer Placement Programme provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience on real projects while working alongside experienced engineers and multidisciplinary teams. You will develop technical, professional and collaborative skills in a supportive environment and gain an insight into a career in Rail Civil Engineering.

Job Responsibilities

During your placement, you will have the opportunity to: Support the development of rail civil engineering designs and project deliverables. Assist with integrating engineering designs from other railway disciplines, including signalling, electrification and permanent way. Support the planning of construction and commissioning activities to minimise disruption to passengers and the public. Contribute to designs that promote sustainable outcomes during construction and throughout the asset lifecycle. Assist in developing designs that are safe to build, operate and maintain. Support the preparation of concept and outline design proposals for rail maintenance, renewal and enhancement projects. Assist with the inspection, assessment and design of bridges and other railway structures. Undertake engineering analysis and calculations under the guidance of experienced engineers. Contribute to railway station and urban realm projects, including platforms, concourses and footbridges. Use industry-standard engineering software and BIM tools to support project delivery. Participate in project meetings and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

Currently studying towards a BEng or MEng in Civil Engineering (or a related discipline). Expected to achieve a 2:1 classification or above (or equivalent). An interest in railway engineering and transportation infrastructure. Rail-related modules or previous rail experience would be advantageous. Enthusiastic, hard-working and keen to learn. Good Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
