About this role

Job Description

The Role     The Vehicle Experiences Engine (VEE) at GM is transforming how millions of people interact with their vehicles. At the foundation of that transformation is the  Core OS group  — the team that builds the high-performance  operating-system  foundation on which GM's next generation of vehicle software runs. Our work spans hypervisors and virtualization, safety and health management, containerization, and the core OS services that let multiple operating systems — Linux, Android, and QNX — share a single high-compute platform safely and efficiently.        As Senior Software Engineering Manager, Core OS, you will build this team from the ground up.  You'll  define the charter, hire the founding engineers,  set  the architecture, and  establish  how the Core OS layer interfaces with the silicon, guest OS, and vehicle program teams around it. You will be accountable for both standing up the team and delivering its first production milestones.        This is a defining opportunity to shape the future of software-defined mobility: the platform your organization builds determines the computing efficiency, responsiveness, scalability, reliability of   every exp erience layered on top of it , and across every vehicle program that ships on it  — and makes GM's vehicles smarter, safer, and continuously upgradeable.        What   You’ll   Do:   Lead and grow  a high-performing engineering organization of senior engineers and engineering leaders, fostering technical excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.    Own  the roadmap and delivery  of the core OS layer: hypervisor and virtualization, virtual machine  lifecycle  and resource partitioning, inter-VM communication, and the boot and secure-boot chain.    Deliver the safety-relevant foundation  of the  compute  platform — freedom from interference between partitions, health monitoring, fault detection, and recovery — in partnership with functional safety and cybersecurity teams.    Establish on-vehicle container and workload management , including runtime isolation, lifecycle management, resource governance, and updateability of platform workloads.    Enable multiple guest operating systems  — embedded Linux ( Yocto ), Android, and QNX — on shared  compute , with consistent platform services, interfaces, and tooling across all of them.    Set and drive platform KPIs  for  compute  efficiency, responsiveness, startup and boot time, memory footprint, scalability, and reliability.    Drive cross-functional collaboration  with BSP and silicon enablement, application platform, cybersecurity, functional safety, and vehicle program teams to ensure seamless integration.    Build strong vendor and ecosystem partnerships  — including silicon, RTOS, and hypervisor suppliers — and engage with relevant open-source and industry communities.    Ensure program execution excellence  by tracking progress against vehicle milestones, managing risk, and partnering closely with program management.    Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications)   1 0 + years   of professional experience  building  embedded or  systems software, with  a strong foundation  in operating system internals, virtualization, or real-time systems.    5+ years of engineering leadership experience , including leading senior engineers   and   managers, with a proven record of scaling teams and delivering results.    Bachelor's degree in computer science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or   related   field s .   Demonstrated success delivering  production-grade OS or platform software  on modern SoC-based or embedded systems.    Demonstrated effectiveness in ambiguous, early-stage environments — defining scope,  establishing  interfaces with adjacent organizations, and making architectural commitments with incomplete information    Depth in at least one of:  type-1
